Mr Fred Knight of Lowestoft recently sent the ERA some money to buy flowers to put on the grave of: “Mrs Wilson, a very dear lady who was a widow and her son was in the army. She lived in Whitwell, near Worksop and took in we four evacuee boys and card for us just as our mothers did. I was unable to be on the last visit to Whitwell so if you would kindly get some flowers to put on her grave for me and the other lads. Unfortunately Phillip Ives has passed away and I do not know where Peter Cook and Brian Holland are. I hope to visit Whitwell again some time.” Pictured below are, left to right, Fred Knights, Brian Holland, Mrs Wilson, Phillip Ives and Peter Cook. (Editor’s note: Of course we will put some flowers on your foster mother’s grave)

The following people were evacuated to Drighlington, West Yorkshire, in July 1944. Many stayed intil well into 1945 – Doreen J Fish (married name Nicalou) lived at 97 Whitehall Road. Donald Fish (also Whitehall Road) with Mr & Mrs Briggs, Garda Webb, John Horsey, lived at 95 Whitehall Road. The Fish family came from Pelham Road, Bexleyheath. These youngsters enlivened our lives enormously. We did not have any official evacuees in 1939 as we were near industrial areas. I would love to hear from these people.(Editor’s note: Whitehall Road is in a district of Leeds, from which there was a major evacuation in 1939)

Ron Waller was evacuated in 1939 from Medway Cottage Homes to Whitstable in Kent, then from London to Brixham in Devon. Finally to Brentwood in Essex. He would love to hear from anyone who was at the same venues.November 2007
