Joan Hope nee Johnstone writes:

“Is there anyone who was evacuated from Thornhill School Islington, to Market Harborough in September 1939? I was aged 6. No one knew where we were going and I had a new knapsack with a change of clothes and some sweets, my gas mask and my label. My mum walked beside me from school to the station taking the weight of the knapsack off my back. I was billeted with a middle-aged, childless couple whose parents had a small holding and I was taught to milk the goats. There was a Symington’s Soup factory nearby. I thought it was a lovely smell. I got earache and because the couple didn’t know how to cope my mother came and took me home. I watched the blitz and dog-fights, played on the Anderson shelter. Then I was sent to Mile End, near Norwich. I was on my own this time and very unhappy at first. After about eighteen months my mother collected me. Then my dad’s workshop was bombed and we moved out to Colindale, right near Hendon Aerodrome. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers any of the above.”
