Peter Willimot writes:

“I would love to be reunited with two of my fellow evacuees to the village of Ampney Crucis in Gloucestershire, situated three miles from Cirencester. They were two Jewish sisters who were billeted in the Lodge Cottage, opposite the War Memorial. They were about 8 to 10 years old and a happy pair. Sorry I have forgotten their names.”

Joan Saunders would like to hear from anyone who was evacuated to Exeter or Ilfracombe. She writes: “My sister and I were in Exeter when it was bombed. We went to a Catholic school in the Mint. We used to go across to the Priory for P.E. I visited there about four years ago and they had records of visitors in their Visitors Book. I remember my father signing it. Unfortunately he died whilst we were in Exeter. I was ten years old. We were evacuated from St Antonys School in Anerley. We were then moved to Ilfracombe.”

Mrs Pat Hayes and Mrs Bety Harworth would love to see Darwin, Lancashire mentioned in The Evacuee.

“We were 12 when we were sent there from Harpurhey High School in Moston, Manchester. We had a very happy six months in Darwen and came home with agreat appreciation of northern hospitality and a lifetime love of dialect. We were amongst the last to be chosen, along with a family of five black children who were taken by the local vicar. He hadn’t been asked to billet anyone originally. They lived with him at the vicarage for many years and he took them with him when he moved to another tow. I managed to track the you ngest down some years ago when we did a talk at the local library. He was 5 years old when I saw him at the vicarage ..... We wondered if anyone else from our school would like to contact us – the Robert twins.

Ruth Tulett is trying to trace an evacuee named Elizabeth Ventry who came from Liverpool and was billeted with Ruth’s Grandma at Laburnham Road, Davenham near Northwich Cheshire in the 1940s. Elizabeth would have been about 8-10 years at the time. She would have attended Davenham Primary School. My Grandma at that time was called Louie Dickens. She did not have Elizabeth for long as my Grandma broke her arm, the doctor told her it was too much for her to look after her own son and an evacuee, so poor Elizabeth had to go and stay somewhere else.
