Dear Parent/Guardian
Virtually every school in this country was affected by the great evacuation of children during the Second World War, either because it was evacuated, or it was in a reception area and found its numbers on the roll doubled or even trebled overnight. It was estimated that 3.5 million children were moved from their homes to safety. Members of your family may have been evacuated, or affected by the biggest family and social upheaval of our time – the long term effects of which are still being felt to this day.
The Evacuees Reunion Association has commissioned a National Memorial to the Evacuation. A scale model of the proposed life size bronze monument as shown above, will portray eleven children of various ages. They are all clutching hands, some facing one way, some another, to depict the confusion they felt on that day which would change their lives forever.
The cost of the Memorial (estimated at £1 million) has to be raised by the Evacuees Reunion Association, and to help us we are inviting your school to participate in a national draw to select the children’s faces and hands to be used on the Monument. If you wish your child to be in with a chance of having their face and hands adorn the monument forever, simply complete the application form below (one form required for each child) and return it with £3.00 for each child entered, to your school within three weeks of receipt of this form. Cheques should be made payable to your school, who will send all applications together to our Head Office – 50p per application will be retained by your child/children’s school to help its funds.
The Draw will be made in December 2009 by Michael Aspel, OBE who is one of our Patrons, and Maurice Blik, the world-renowned sculptor. All application forms must be completed correctly and signed by a parent or legal guardian to be entered in the Draw. The winners will be presented with a certificate and invited with their families, to the unveiling of the Memorial in central London, which will be a major event, attended by the media. The Memorial is to be sited close to St Paul’s Cathedral, London where it will be seen by millions of people.
We do hope your child/children will participate in this unique draw. Good Luck!
